So out of the blue after upgrading to a newer JRE our NetScaler Admin GUI stopped functioning, resulting in a nice JRE error:

So I still wasn’t satisfied with the results accomplished in an earlier article. Especially with the latest version of the NetScaler the loading of the Java applets took about 1 minute. It’s easy to reduce the load time to about 20 seconds. However people might consider it a security risk.
Reading the Citrix forums you will see a lot of people complaining about the NetScaler GUI. Truth is Citrix in general is not able to build some good consoles. Pick one: PVS, XenApp, XenDesktop NetScaler. There’s always something wrong with them. Anyway, the NetScaler GUI by far sucks the most. Especially the latest version NS10.0: Build 75.7.nc is a disaster. I have a few workarounds to be able to work with the GUI, but maybe the better idea is to just learn the commandline (yes, another one).
Follow these 9 steps to perform a Command Line Upgrade or Downgrade of your NetScaler HA config.
Client Detection Fail
This one is poorly documented, but I cannot be the only one it has happened to 🙂 We have 2 beautiful Citrix NetScaler MPX5500 devices in a HA config. Behind them we loadbalance 2 Citrix WebInterface 5.4 servers. When enabling just one of the WebInterfaces (doesn’t matter which one) ClientDetection works like a charm. When enabling both WI servers client detection fails. You get an error: “There was a problem with the client detection and the download process. Contact your system administrator”.
I encountered on several machines that the admin page of the NetScaler 10.x freezes when opening different items.
